Mission Viejo Natural Inspiration

Situated in the Saddleback Valley of South Orange County, Mission Viejo is a thriving community with a population slightly over 100,000. In 2007, it earned the distinction of being the safest city in the U.S., as recognized by Morgan Quitno Press. Predominantly residential, Mission Viejo boasts an array of single-family homes, a community college, a man-made lake for recreation, a regional hospital, and a bustling mall, among other retail and entertainment venues. As the pioneering master-planned community in the United States, Mission Viejo stands as a testament to successful urban planning and community development.

The Wonderful Oso Creek Trail

Oso Creek, a 13.5-mile tributary in southern Orange County, California, flows into Arroyo Trabuco and is its largest tributary. Covering a 20-square-mile area between the San Joaquin Hills and the Santa Ana Mountains, it’s part of the San Juan Creek drainage system. Originating near Mission Viejo in the Santa Ana Mountains, it’s dammed to create Upper Oso Reservoir and Lake Mission Viejo. However, much of the creek is channelized and polluted. Named “Oso” (Spanish for “bear”) likely by Spanish conquistadors, the creek remained largely untouched until the 1970s. While it’s close to Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park and O’Neill Regional Park, it lacks major parks within its area. Additionally, Interstate 5 runs alongside it for over half its distance.

Visit The Famous Lake Mission Viejo

Lake Mission Viejo, located in Orange County’s Mission Viejo, is a recreational reservoir formed by damming Oso Creek, which is part of the Trabuco and San Juan Creek drainage systems. Unlike many lakes, it isn’t fed by urban runoff and is maintained for safe contact. Managed by the Lake Association, the lake spans 124 surface acres, complemented by 50 acres of land. This includes the North and East Beaches, parking areas, a market dock, and a dam. Members of the Lake Association can enjoy two expansive beaches, picnic spots, a clubhouse, boat launch, and a fishing area.
